I logged into Yahoo! Personals the other day to note any changes and notice a few surprises with regards to the memberships. The first is, Yahoo has gone from 3 membership levels down to 2. Their Premier Membership has been removed and the remaining membership pricing will be just a dollar more, when compared to the old casual membership. Subscription prices are now between 13.99 to 25.99 per month depending on the length of the membership. The old Premier prices for a month ranged from 20.83 to 39.95. The features that where part of the Premier subscription level (which dealt with searching and rating matches) have either been removed or rolled into the existing paid memberships. The free membership as far as I can tell has remained unchanged.
The major surprise is Yahoo! Personals has a guarantee now. If you purchase a 6 month membership Yahoo will make you a 6-Month Promise. If you do not find someone special by the end of your subscription, they will give you another six months for free. You must have a approved searchable profile with a photo and must communicate with at least 5 different members each month to be eligible. Another nice touch is they will email your status each month to help you keep track of your eligibility.
It appears that the 6-month promise started in May, 2008. I am unsure why Yahoo did not promote this at all since few dating services actually offer a guarantee. If promoted they would have brought in more members and received some free publicity from dating blogs such as this one. Sometimes you have to wonder about large companies marking departments, it doesn't take much to release a press release.
Yahoo Personals promise is very similar to Match.com "Make Love Happen Guarantee". In fact it is virtually the same except for a few small details. I guess they figured if it works for Match, it will work for Yahoo.

And moments later, it was announced that in the second ballot of Council Position 4 the results were Plants 50.3%, Bagshaw 48.6%, so that too goes to a dual endorsement vs. no endorsement revote now. Itll be done by paper ballot - Nuses proposal to do a hand vote was challenged.
10:05 PM: While those votes are counted, its on to the Seattle City Attorneys race. West Seattleite Tom Carr vs. challenger Pete Holmes. Ex-chair Ivan Weiss bellows, TOM CARR! Dorsol Plants yells, PETE HOLMES! After speeches, its time for a vote in this race. There is a motion to suspend the rules and conduct every further vote tonight by hand vote rather than paper ballots.
10:17 PM: Dual endorsements announced for Ginsberg and Conlin, and for Plants and Bagshaw.
10:26 PM: In the midst of speeches for mayoral nominations. Michael McGinn is the first candidate to speak on his own behalf - Vlad Oustimovitch spoke for City Councilmember Jan Drago, State Sen. Joe McDermott spoke for Mayor Greg Nickels. McGinn mentioned his opposition to the tunnel. Oustimovitch mentioned that Drago had tried to salvage the monorail and when that failed, he says she said, West Seattle got screwed, adding, She was right. Next candidates nominated, Joe Mallahan (who related an anecdote involving West Seattles Holy Rosary and his childhood) and Norman Sigler. No one spoke on James Donaldsons behalf. Now the voting will begin, though theres some question about whether a candidate can be voted on if not nominated by a voting member. Sigler will be removed from consideration as a result. Vote-counting under way now. Mallahans mention of Holy Rosary, by the way, turns out to be regarding his uncle.
10:39 PM UPDATE: Now to Seattle City Council Position 6 - Nick Licata, Marty Kaplan, Jessie Israel nominated. Licata said he wants to be re-elected to work on a Sustainable Seattle. Kaplan says, ve got a choice in this race its an interesting choice. Israel notes Rep. Nelson and Cascade Bicycle Club have endorsed her.
10:48 PM: Tom Carr receives Seattle City Attorney endorsement of 34th DDs with 68% of the vote. (minutes later) Mayor first ballot - nobody got two-thirds - Nickels got 52 percent, McGinn got 19%, they are top two and go to next ballot.
11:00 PM: Seattle Council Position 6 - Licata got 55% of vote and Israel 40% of vote so they go to a second ballot. We are now in Hour 5 of this meeting. Its just been announced that King County Council chair and already-endorsed-by-this-group County Executive candidate Dow Constantine is here.
11:08 PM: Just announced, neither Nickels nor McGinn got two-thirds support on second ballot - 64% for Nickels, 35% for McGinn. Now a third ballot will decide on dual endorsement or no endorsement. And meantime theyre moving on to decide what to vote on the bag fee (Seattle Referendum 1). Ann Martin is speaking in favor of it, holding up cloth bags: This is a big step for our environment. (A vote FOR the referendum would be a vote in favor of the 20-cent fee for non-reusable shopping bags.) There was also a speaker against - and now Sharon Huling is speaking in favor - saying plastic pollution is a critical problem. Cherisse Luxa follows that up by speaking against the bag fee - saying its a fee. And then, speakers for and against REJECTING the bag fee - Chris Porter, against rejecting: The planet cannot wait.

Okay, for those of you who are not familiar with this series, there are five books in it; Heaven, Purgatory, Hell, Faith, and Genesis. They are M/M erotica novellas and very, very good. Unlike many M/M books, they arent just sex with a little story mixed in. The plots of all five books are well-thought-out. And heavily laced with sex, yes. It is erotica, after all. The sex is very, very hot, too. Leaving all parties (you and the characters) satisfied, if I do say so myself.
It begins with a gay-for-you plot as the first novella. You know how it goes. He never wanted another man until HE came along and then suddenly its wham-bam-thank-you-maam. Er, sir. The other guy is firmly bisexual. As unlikely as the gay-for-you scenario is, I admit that I am guilty of liking it and using it myself. If you question that, I refer you back to my post about the two guys Lachlan and Justyn. Justyn is a gay-for-you.
We move on to Purgatory, which is a Im-not-gay-anymore book. In a nutshell, he was in love with the guy, guy turned him down, claiming to be not gay, guy goes off to stardom while Guy 1 becomes a highschool math teacher and no longer gay. Guy 2 discovers the joys of ass sex and years later wants Guy 1. Blah blah blah. How do you think it ends? Actually, it is one of my favorites. I really liked Purgatory.
Next, we have Hell, which is actually one of the guys names. Cool, huh? This one is also pretty classic, but whats wrong with that? Both are already gay and they do the just sex thing for a while. One of them has the m not as good as the other guys, hell get tired of me soon so dont get attatched thing going on (and he pulled it off quite nicely but I admit that I wanted to smack him).
Faith. Kind of a gay-for-you but not quite. Guy 1 has had a very rockstar-marriage (one of less than a year) and now he find that he wants his divorce lawyer. Hes been considering gay sex for a while but never felt inclined to try it out before. Wondering why I didnt mention any names except for Hells? To get you interested of course! Now, youre about to go to Google and search for a summary of these books arent you, you people who have yet to discover the joys of the Heaven Sent boys.

At any rate, just loved the Heaven Sent boys. Usually, I can pick out my favorite book in a series for whatever reason, but with these I dont know if I can. I loved them all. All I can say for certain is that Genesis wasnt my abso fave of all of them, becausecorrupted person that I amthere just wasnt enough hot, nekkid manlove in it for me.

Theres a sad truth in my pile of to-be-read books. Some of the books in my pile just arent the kinds of books I enjoy reading.
Even some of those that were good just couldnt hold my interest long enough for me to make it to the end of the book. Some books stalled sooner than later, and some I consider only temporarily stalled.
Ive been known to stop in the middle of a book and then go back to it later and enjoy the book more than ever. Ive even recommended some of those books, because who knows why I stopped reading in the first place? When I went back, I really did enjoy the book.
When I pick up a book Ive put down unfinished, I never start reading back at the beginning. I prefer to make my way through the book from where I stopped previously. And maybe thats some of the problem. If a book is that easy to start reading from the middle why was all that stuff included at the beginning anyway?
Dont you often find that many books start too early in the story? I enjoy the occasional slow build up in a book, but most often, I find that some authors dont want to leave anything for me to assume or conclude on my own. They want to explain every aspect of the story and characters, to the point where theres no mystery left in the book at all. But I enjoy just jumping in and figuring out some of this stuff for myself.
In fact, I enjoy mystery in my reading, and Im not talking about whodoneit. Im talking about the mystery of uncovering character motivations. I dont want to know everything at the outset of the book. I enjoy coming up with my own thoughts about why the characters might be doing whatever it is theyre doing and to have those assumptions either confirmed or ripped apart later by a great author whos willing to leave a few things up to my imagination. What about you?
I thought it might be interesting to list a few of the books I havent finished so far this year and give some of the reasons why I put them aside. I make no judgment of the books that havent held my interest, because I havent finished them and because someday, I still might make it to the end.

They are the same, regardless of the situation, and I can assure you all of them do what they say, and more. Much more. I have great respect for them. And if you know me personally, you know it's tough to earn my respect, not to mention my great respect.

But Di Paola also realizes that being a conservative in a business traditionally known for its liberal leanings has probably hampered his career.

The problem with show business is that its run by people who lean left. Ive been doing it 20 years. Its not a myth, he said. I still believe the majority of people believe like I do. Most of them in the middle of the country believe as I do, and Im hoping theyll be there for me when everybody else turns their back. Its a risk that Im willing to take. Its kind of fun to go against the grain.

And going against the grain in this instance means venturing into comedic territory that others are tiptoeing around.

In my opinion standup comedy should not be adulterated, he said. s the problem to me today doing standup comedy, you dont see enough people trying to do socially relevant bits. Weve got two wars going on and were on the verge of depression in this country. You can stick your head into a comedy club and nobodys talking about it, which to me is kind of sad. I still take it as an art form. I like to be socially relevant. To me, thats what separates a good comic from an interchangeable one.
